Neither One or Somewhere In Between 2018
This Project utilized icons from Ousmane Sembéne’s 1969 film La Noire de ... (Black Girl), such as the mask, as a collision of video and sculpture. Viewer’s accessed the moving image by looking into the eyes of a replica of Sembéne’s mask. Sembéne’s film was also edited. Images deleted and re ordered as a conversion between a narrator, myself, and a ghost. A silent video, of subtitles only text, written by myself with excerpts from Black feminist theorists M. Jacqui Alexander, Katherine McKittrick, Omi-seke Tinsley as well as Frantz Fanon. Chicago DJ Ayana Contreras produced a soundtrack for the installation in which she sampled audio from a Cameroonian singer contemporaneous to Sembéne and Fanon.
